Carolyn White
Memorial Competition
In 1985, the Flute Society’s Committee made the decision to create a Scholarship Fund aimed at supporting young flautists. After four years of dedicated fundraising, the first scholarship was awarded in 1989, with Geoffrey Collins serving as adjudicator. In late 1995, the scholarship was renamed the Carolyn White Memorial Scholarship to honor a talented musician and advocate for the arts. To mark its 21st anniversary, a 3rd Prize was introduced for the 2006 Carolyn White Memorial Scholarship.
Carolyn White, born in 1960, discovered her passion for the flute at Vermont High School under the guidance of Murray Cooper. She continued her studies at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, where she learned from Zdenek Bruderhans, graduating with an Honours Degree in Music in 1982.
Throughout her career, Carolyn performed with several orchestras, including the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, the South Australian Youth Orchestra, and the Australian Youth Orchestra. She also played casually with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
From 1985 to 1988, she held the position of President of the Flute Society of SA and in 1988 she was honored as an Honorary Life Member. Carolyn passed away in September 1995, and her contributions continue to be cherished and remembered.

Robert Brown
Memorial Competition
Robert Brown was a devoted and active member of the flute community in South Australia, volunteering in many organisations throughout his lifetime. He was involved with the Adelaide Eisteddfod Society from 1981, serving as the Convenor of the Flute and Woodwind Divisions. His participation extended to the Music Teachers’ Association of South Australia (MTASA), where he took on multiple roles over the years, and he also hosted flute programs on 5MBS, sharing his enthusiasm for the instrument with a wider audience.
Robert served on the Flute Society of South Australia committee for more than 40 years since its inception by Professor David Cubbin in 1972. He held several key positions, including Secretary, Membership Secretary, Public Officer, Vice-President, and President, eventually being recognized as a Vice Patron and Honorary Life Member for his dedication to the Society.
His meticulous approach was evident in how he managed committee practices and kept detailed historical records. He prioritized maintaining strong membership numbers, which he successfully did by organising the committee to personally connect with all of its members. Notably, he also undertook the role of establishing and producing the South Australian Flute News from 1979, providing a needed platform for sharing news and information within the flute community.
In recognition of his significant contributions, Robert was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2019 for his Service to the Community through Music.
Robert passed away in July 2021. We will always remember him as someone who spent his whole life serving our flute community with passion and commitment.
